Gekkō Hayate was the examiner of the preliminary third portion of the Chūnin exams. At first sight, Hayate appears to not be in the best of health, with a chronic cough and bags under his eyes.

Hayate was the first to discover the truth behind the secret plan between the Sound and the Sand - he was discovered eavesdropping on a conversation between Baki (of the Sand) and Yakushi Kabuto (of the Sound), and subsequently killed by Baki. Were Hayate able to pass on the information gained from that fateful night, Konoha could have avoided the disasterous battle against Orochimaru and the loss of their Third Hokage.

Hayate's lover, Uzuki Yūgao, swore that she would avenge his death.

Trivia

-The name "Gekkō" means "lunar light" and "Hayate" means "quick as wind". Both are names of Japanese fighter planes from World War II.

-Hayate appears to be left-handed due to the way he wears, draws, and wields his sword.
