Lesson 1.
Your Equipment.
Hair dying is really quite simple, but to do it yourself and ensure that you get that profesionally dyed look, you have to choose your hair dye carefully. There is a great range of dyes easily bought at your local supermarket or hair salon suppliers, and take your time in picking the colours, tones, and makes that you think suit you.
But to get started, you will need the following equipment:
Gloves. These will allow you to spread the dye easily over your whole head without staining your hands an odd colour. This should be supplied with the hair dye you have purchased!
Hair dying brush. This helps make application of hair dye quick and easy, although it may not be supplied with your purchased dye. You can buy one cheaply from your local hairdresser or supermarket.
Hair dying tub. In this you can place everything included in your purchased hair dying kit, and mix it together, ready to apply to your hair. This also may not be supplied with your purchased dye, but is easily bought from your local hairdresser or supermarket.
A towel or apron. Hair dye, especially bleach, can stain and will ruin your clothes, so be sure to either wrap a towel tightly round you or wear an apron to avoid splashes and spillages.
Hair clips and hairbrush. You will need to seperate your hair to make application of dye easy, so ensure you have lots of hair clips or pins and a hairbrush close by.
Lesson 2.
Let's get started.
First things first, open your hair dying kit, put on your included gloves and follow the set of instructions included. This will include a range of bottles containing certain liquids, make sure you tip the right ones into your
hair dying tub, and mix them thoroughly together. You will know that it is ready to use when all lumps are gone and you are left with a smooth liquid.
(Don't be alarmed, depending on what colour dye you have, this mixture will be an odd colour. Normally it will be a completely different colour than what your end result will be, so don't panic!)
Make sure you are protecting your clothes with either a
towel or
apron.
Seperate all top layers of your hair from the very bottom layer.
Pin all top layers securely to the top of your head. Using the
hair dying brush, apply an even amount of hair dye to this bottom layer of your hair. Spread it through this part of hair completely so the hair is saturated.
Remove the
pins, and using either your
hairbrush or fingers, bring down another small bottom layer of hair, and secure all top layers back onto the top of your head. Using your
hair dying brush, repeat the application of hair dye onto this section of hair, untill completely saturated.
Repeat this process, sectioning small amounts of hair untill you have covered all hair with hair dye, from bottom to top.
Once you have finished, you may still have some dye left in your
hair dying tub. This you can rub through your hair - easily done with fingers - to ensure that it is covering your hair evenly!
Depending on your dye - and whether you used bleach or not - the amount of time you leave the dye on your hair will vary. Normally it is for half an hour, but bleach can be left on for up to an hour and a half.
Always read the instructions to be sure of this length of time for you and your dye. Then, simply rinse the dye out of your hair until the water runs clear.
Lesson 3.
Staying safe, keeping clean!
As mentioned before, dyes can stain your skin and clothes, so be sure to wear
gloves and a
towel/apron. However, some dyes, such as bleach, can also be corrosive to skin and sensitive scalps. They can cause irritation and a burning sensation, so if using these it is
crucial that you wear your gloves at all times, and keep the bleach on your hair no longer than stated, and this time may even have to be halved for sensitive skin.
WARNING: some dyes can cause allergic reaction so if skin irriation / burning sensation occurs on your scalp at time of application, disctontinue hair dying immediately, and you may even have to consult your doctor.
Hair dye does contain a lot of chemicals, such as ammonia - which is used to make fertiliser aswell as dyes - and so breathing in large amounts is not advisable.
Do not sniff/swallow/
inhale any hairdye, and avoid all contact with eyes. If contact does occur, wash immediatly with warm water, and maybe consult your doctor.
But don't panic, allergic reactions to hair dye is not common, so enjoy and get ready to dazzle with your new look!
