Stem cell research
Stem cell research always has been-- and probably always will be-- one of the most popular and controversial topics of all time. Some say it is wrong because it involves using the cells of unborn children; this is true, although it does have many benefits for those who have disabilities and threatening illnesses. This is also true, according to the research. When stem cells were applied to animals, the results were that the animals were much stronger, and no longer favored certain sides of their bodies. A stem cell is a basically a blank cell that forms into any type of cell it is near. Stem cells can also be used to help out newborns; while we don't yet (as far as i know) have the technology to create new limbs we can help by adding stem cells to under-develope
The history of research into these magic medicines is more lengthy than you might imagine. In fact, they were first mentioned in 1908, when the Russian histologist Alexander Maksimov (1874–1928) proposed their name at a meeting of the congress of the hematologic society in Berlin. However, it wasn't until the 1960s that scientific evidence of adult neurogenesis, ongoing stem cell activity in the brain, was proven to exist.
In 1963, scientists Ernest McCulloch and James Till illustrated the presence of self-renewing cells in mouse bone marrow. This came to fruition in 1968 , when a bone marrow transplant between two siblings successfully treated SCID. It wasn't long until evidence of stem cells popped up elsewhere; soon, haematopoietic stem cells were discovered in human cord blood.
In the year 1981, scientists Martin Evans, Matthew Kaufman, and Gail R. Martin made a breakthrough when they successfully derived mouse embryonic stem cells from the inner cell mass of a mouse fetus. Gail R. Martin holds a claim to fame for coining the term "Embryonic Stem Cell".
These helpful stem cells weren't the only kind of stem cells to be discovered; leukemia, a fatal cancer that afflicts children, was shown to originate from a haematopoietic stem cell in 1997. This was the first direct evidence for cancer stem cells. A sad discovery indeed, but only one year later, James Thomson and coworkers at the University of Wisconsin–Madi
The new millennium would bring many new advancements in this technology. For instance, in 2001, scientists at Advanced Cell Technology succeeded in cloning the first early (four- to six-cell stage) human embryos for the purpose of generating embryonic stem cells. 2005, researchers at Kingston University in England claimed to have discovered a third category of stem cell, dubbed cord-blood-der
These researchers were soon vindicated for their hard work, when researchers at UC Irvine's Reeve-Irvine Research Center succeeded in partially restoring the ability of mice with paralyzed spines to walk through the injection of human neural stem cells. At last, it seemed, these stem cells had proved their worth. In fact, in October 2006, the brilliant researchers in Newcastle University in England created the first ever artificial liver cells using umbilical cord blood stem cells.
However, much controversy was brewing about the use of these umbilical stem cells, due to facts which we will discuss later. But in January 2007, these setbacks were stopped temporarily when scientists at Wake Forest University led by Dr. Anthony Atala and Harvard University report discovery of a new type of stem cell in amniotic fluid, which could provide an alternative to use of embryonic stem cells. In fact, in June of the same year, research reported by three different groups showed that normal skin cells in mice could be “reprogrammed” to an embryonic state.
As you can see, these cells have the potential to cure almost any disease. However, there are many opponents of this method. One of the most well known groups against stem cell research is the notorious Westboro Baptist Church. They believe, as stated before, that using cells from unborn fetuses is considered murder. Many churches share their views; however, the thing that sets them apart from everyone else is that they are far more active and aggressive. They have sometimes gone as far as to make threatening phone calls to the employees of the research establishments
The church isn't the only vocal opponent of stem cell research; there are many opponents in the halls of the Capital as well. Many senators (usually Republican) have stood up in opposition to the method. The first president to speak out against stem cell research was Gorge W Bush . Shortly after he made his statement against the subject, a banquet was held for the tube-grown children that would have been donated to these facilities. He referred to them as “snowflake children.” This was most likely due to the fact that they all had pale white skin and white hair, despite not being albino.
The way stem cells are applied is by simply injecting them into the area where they are needed. The procedure takes at least two weeks to take full effect. There are currently research facilities in every state, but the state with the most facilities is California. For several years, stem cell research was only legal in a few states until late 2009, when current president Barack Obama fully legalized stem cell research. There have recently been tests done on humans, but no official report has apparently been filed. Now i can understand the skeptics but, as mentioned before, there are other ways of getting these stem cells. In fact, if you ever have had a bone marrow transplant you can thank stem cell from another's bones for the help.
The process of extraction is simple. It can take a little time, but once a donor with a matching blood type is fond they are given a drug which will get all those stem cells out of your bones and get them out. Then after around a few days (around five to six) of waiting before harvesting a catheter or double IV is used on each arm and the blood is strained of stem cells and the blood is returned to the donor's body. This process will cost you a day twelve to twenty-four hours to get it all (or at lest most) of them out.
Stem cells, once extracted, can be used in many other ways besides bone marrow transplants. For instance, as we mentioned earlier, scientists have grown entire working organs simply from reprogramming stem cells to function and grow into specific types of cells. This process involves taking chemicals that tell the cell (while it's growing) what to form into. Once the stem cell has the chemical, and it's order, it changes it make-up to become that specific type of cell. This creates a new working organ which, as long as the blood type is the same, can be transplanted into the patient, thus giving them a new chance at life.
In this paper, we have talked about the history, the uses, and the opponents of stem cell research. Time will tell whether this landmark method will gain traction, but in the meantime, we can hope that one day, all the diseases that affect humanity can perhaps be alleviated by stem cells.
Stem cell research always has been-- and probably always will be-- one of the most popular and controversial topics of all time. Some say it is wrong because it involves using the cells of unborn children; this is true, although it does have many benefits for those who have disabilities and threatening illnesses. Sines of stress can be as small as a movement of the hand or as big as totally chageing your posstcher. Now bare in mind that the fallowing arent your one hundred percent way to know there are out side factors that can effect it they might be stressed over something elce or might have lied to some one else but they are a good first warning. "You have just unlocked NESS, the PSI-powder youth!" Little did I know it, but those words would forever change my life and who I am as a person. Let me give you more back story. When I was ten, I bought a game called Super Smash Bros. It was a fighting game with many well-known Nintendo characters- Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, etc. - however, there was one character who, no matter how I tried, I could never unlock. One night, at a church gathering, my cousin told me how to unlock Ness.
I tried for what seemed like forever to beat the game with three lives. Eventually, the special character screen showed and the fight began. As the fight progressed, I thought to myself, Wait, I have never seen anyone like Ness before. He was a kid who looked no more than 13 and looked like a baseball player, but he shot fire out of his hands and missiles out of his head.
After I won the fight, I looked at his character bio, which said he was from a game called Earthbound. I quickly turned on my computer, and, long story short, my computer fried. I knew it would be awhile before I would be getting a new computer, so I gave up on researching the game for a while. Several years later, I was in a computer class, and I was bored out of my mind, so I decided to start researching the game again. I came across an article about the ending of the game. It scared me half to death. The article was filled with horrifying images and had a video of the final boss.
The following is a passage from the article. Shigesato Itoi stated that his “inspiration for Giygas came from a traumatic childhood experience where he mistakenly walked into an adult movie theater and caught a glimpse of a rape scene in the 1957 movie Kenpei to Barabara Shibijin. In Earthbound, Giygas is the main antagonist, who gains such a chaotically menacing power that it destroys himself. Riddled insanity warped his already corrupted mind to complete destruction. When confronted, Giygas loses his mind completely, and becomes blinded by his own irrationalitie
Shortly after I made the YouTube account, I became close friends with someone who, if not for the fact that he, too, liked Earthbound, I would have never met. One day I was on a web site called billed your own south park corrupter I was trying to make Ness Eric the person in question asked me if I was making Ness I was shocked because I thought I was the only person who liked earthbound within a 1000 mile ratios ever sense then we have been the best of friends. We have been working together on just about everything. Soon afterward, I learned that there was a sequel to Earthbound, called Mother 3, available only in Japan. After downloading a ROM of the game and an English translation patch for it, I began playing the game extensively, and was very moved by the game’s intense story. In fact, Mother 3 is the first game that ever made me cry. I can safely say, as well as millions of others, that I am a better person thanks to those two games.
