Morino Ibiki is the examiner for the first part of the Chūnin Selection Exam. As the commanding officer of the Konoha Anbu Torture and Interrogation Force (木ノ葉暗部拷問・尋問部隊, Konoha Anbu Gōmon/Jinmon Butai), the design of the first test is obviously his. Described as a sadist by some, Ibiki can easily make people experience mental suffering brought on by his interrogation skills while not even exerting physical torture. He has complete knowledge of human psychology; by attacking a person's mind, he can gain control over their spirit. Ibiki bears burn marks, punctures from where screws were used, and long slash marks, all the physical scars of having been horribly tortured himself. This perhaps illustrates his ability to withstand torture without giving up valuable information.

In the Tea Country filler arc of the anime, Morino Ibiki is shown to have a younger brother, Morino Idate, who left the village with Rakusho Aoi and defected to Hidden Rain. It was also shown that his scars were Aoi's doing. These two incidents have occured only in the Anime and are not considered canon by fans.

Trivia:

-"Morino Ibiki" means "A snore in the forest"; clearly a reference to the big bear that he is.
