Haku was born in a snowy village in Mizu no Kuni (Land of Water). During Haku's childhood, wars ravaged the Mizu no Kuni, and since those of advanced bloodlines were commonly used as the most terrifying tools of war, many people irrationally dreaded and hated people of advanced bloodlines. When Haku's father found out that his mother was of an advanced bloodline he killed her and then tried to kill Haku, too. Even though he was still very young, Haku was able to overpower and kill him, apparently without realizing it until after the deed was already over. He wandered the Wave Country as an unwanted, beggar child until he was found by Zabuza, who agreed to take him in and wanted to merely use him as a tool. Haku is fiercely protective of and devoted to the older ninja to an extreme, accepting his life as essentially Zabuza's possession and asking Naruto to kill him when he feared he could no longer be useful to his master. In the manga he is sometimes referred to as Zabuza's "consort", a title usually given to the wives or mistresses of nobility, possibly implying he got more use than just as a fighter.

In his first appearance, he masqueraded as a Hunter-nin from Kirigakure (Hidden Mist), sent to kill Momochi Zabuza. Haku came from an advanced bloodline and had many special techniques, the most powerful being the Makyō Hyōshō (Demonic Mirror Ice Crystals), but he also attacked using Sensatsu Suishō (Thousand Flying Water Needles of Death) and senbon (acupuncture needles). Amazingly, Haku's the only person so far who can use one-handed handseals, this may be a very unique skill he devised (such as below), or may be another genetic ability of his advanced bloodline. Haku knows a great deal of the details of the human body, and can instantly damage, kill, incapacitate, or otherwise disable another instantly with his Senbon, showing that he may be a master of acupuncture. He demonstrated this when he managed to send Senbon into pressure points in the back of Zabuza's neck, and made it appear that he was dead, but actually was in a coma-like state and awakened later, and later did the same to Sasuke. Kakashi theorized he may have learned this from an ANBU academy, as ANBU are trained to know every last detail of the human body.

Haku also has a gift of observation and deviation. He witnessed Kakashi and Zabuza's first fight, and discovered the extent of Kakashi's Sharingan abilities simply by observation, and gave Zabuza a way to easily counter the Sharingan's ability to copy every exact detail of his opponent's fighting style, and the ability to control the user's opponent, making it seem as if they can read the opponent's mind or see into the future.

In Zabuza's last battle over what was later named the Great Naruto bridge, Haku sacrifices his life by taking Hatake Kakashi's Raikiri (Lightning Blade) which was aimed at Zabuza. Haku says he was fighting for his own dream — which was making Zabuza's dreams come true — but in the end, he fought for the dreams of Uchiha Sasuke, Uzumaki Naruto and Haruno Sakura as well, by putting Sasuke in a temporary death-like state like he does to Zabuza, when he could easily kill him.

Despite contrary rumors before the airing, Viz has confirmed that Haku will remain a boy in the English dub.

Trivia

-The name "Haku" means "white".

-Many mistook Haku for being a girl when unmasked including Naruto himself.

-Haku's family name is believed by some to be Shiro (also meaning "white"), as this is what he was called in the Malaysia dub. However, this is only fanon. The reason was because the Malaysia dubbers change his gender to female in episode 14 & changing his/her name to Shiro in episode 15.

-Haku remains very popular despite his relatively early death, routinely appearing in favorite character lists.

-Haku's relationship with Zabuza almost mirrors that of Shishio and Sojiro from Rurouni Kenshin.

-Haku's Demonic Mirror Ice Crystals technique has been changed to Crystal Ice Mirrors in the US dub and the Ice Crystals Magic Mirror Technique in the Viz manga.

-Haku's secret bloodline techniques are known as "Secret Arts of Water" in the Viz manga.
