2008-10-09 [Eyes of the Reaper]: I am the Sergeant-At-Arms of the Oklahoma Junior Classical League. I have taken Latin for four years and skipped one (I'm a Latin V/AP Latin student even though I've only had four real years of the class). I plan on minoring in Latin at Truman State Univeristy. I also plan on teaching it later on in life if my plan to become a professor of philosophy falls through. :) Oh, you may call me Allie.

Yes babe, the roots of the English language are Anglo-Saxon roots, but most of the language we use today came from other places. :)

i assumed, since the vikings never really left england, the majority of their words were integrated into the english language. obviously, over time they've changed. but i bet more words than you think originate from the norse language :]

Oh, here we are:
There are three distinct stages of the English language:
1)Old English (Anglo-Saxon)
2)Middle English
3)Modern English

Old English was dominant from 450-1100CE. It was inflected, meaning it had different words for plurals or verb tenses. It was sparse in vocabulary, and was a different alphabet and pronunciation from our own. Only 20% still remains in Modern English. xD

if 20% of that still remains, isnt that a sizeable chunk? certainly worth mentioning, dont you think? xD

But I think that's mostly because he used to correct me a lot when we first started talking. I learned that proof reading is an excellent thing ^^

You do have a good vocabulary. I like to think that I do as well.

Oh! That's right. "20% remains in modern English."

In 597 CE, St. Augustine and his monks arrived bringing 140 new words to the language. Most of them were religious. For example, altar, mass, priest, psalm, bishop, candle, angel, wine, hymn. They also introduced Latin prefixes and suffixes.

Through the 8th and 9th centuries CE is when the Vikings invaded. They brought many battle and sea words. They also introduced the Scandinavian Social order and administrative system.Therefore, law words were introduced. The Norse also introduced verbs such as "to be" and words with k & g such as, egg, sky, and cake.

Facts of Interest:
-Most people still spoke Anglo-Saxon at that time.
-Most did not read or write; this was because producing writing material was costly, and time consuming.
-Many were "ear" readers". This meant they more or less listened to oral stories being told by a traveling story-teller.

The monks wrote Latin though, not the actual Anglo-Saxon language. xD

You will usually use the semicolon to link independent clauses not joined by a co-ordinating conjunction.
Semicolons should join only those independent clauses that are closely related in meaning.

Example: Abdominal exercises help prevent back pain; proper posture is also important.

This is because they are each independent clauses; an independent clause is a sentence that can stand on its own.

A conjunction is similar to a semi-colon, but its a word instead. Its a word that joins two sentences together.

-So, because a conjunction and a semi-colon are like the same thing, do you see why you can't use them both at the same time? ^^
