Flood the third album by They Might Be Giants, and their first on a major label (Elektra Records). It was released on January 5, 1990.
The album's title is derived from the album's front cover, a picture of 1930's Ohio River flood victims in Louisville, KY, that was found in the archives of Life Magazine.
Flood spent 22 weeks on what is now the Billboard 200, peaking at #75. It also peaked at #14 on the UK Albums Chart, spending 12 weeks on it.
Flood was certified Gold by the RIAA on December 22, 1993 and has since been certified Platinum.
Three singles from the album were released; "Birdhouse In Your Soul", a cover of The Four Lads' "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" and "Twisting", respectively. "Birdhouse In Your Soul" spent 11 weeks on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, reaching #3 and becoming the band's biggest hit to date. "Twisting" spent 7 weeks on the same chart; it only reached #22. Surprisingly, "Istanbul" did not chart, despite its popularity after release.
Thanks to
