Use this as an eye opener. I read it a few days ago, and let me say, Neil Gaiman is an amazing author.

Babycakes (by Neil Gaiman)

A few years back all of the animals went away.

We woke up one morning, and they just weren't there anymore. They didn't even leave us a note, or say goodbye. We never figured out quite where they'd gone.

We missed them.

Some of us thought that the world had ended, but it hadn't. There just weren't any more animals. No cats or rabbits, no dogs or whales, no fish in the seas, no birds in the skies.

We were all alone.

We didn't know what to do.

We wandered around lost, for a time, and then someone pointed out that just because we didn't have animals anymore, that was no reason to change our lives. No reason to change our diets or to cease testing products that might cause us harm.

After all, there were still babies.

Babies can't talk. They can hardly move. A baby is not a rational, thinking creature.

And we used them.

Some of them we ate. Baby flesh is tender and succulent.

We flayed their skin and decorated ourselves in it. Baby leather is soft and comfortable.

Some of them we tested.

We taped open their eyes, dripped detergents and shampoos in, a drop at a time.

We scarred them and scalded them. We burned them. We clamped them and planted electrodes into their brains. We grafted, and we froze and we irradiated.

The babies breathed our smoke, and the babies veins flowed with our medicines and drugs, until they stopped breathing or their blood ceased to flow.

It was hard, of course, but necessary.

No one could deny that.

With the Animals gone, what else could we do?

Some people complained, of course. But then, they always do.

And everything went back to normal.

Only...

Yesterday, all the babies were gone.

We don't know where they went. We didn't even see them go.

We don't know what we're going to do without them.

But we'll think of something. Humans are smart. It's what makes us superior to the animals and the babies.

We'll figure something out.

Leave any comments below, positive or negative. Personally, I love this story, because it's just...revolting in every which way.

2008-08-19 [My Sky's The Limit]: That gave me chills...

2008-08-19 [Deg]: Isn't that a weird story? I read what he had to say about when he wrote it (it came from his collection of short stories called "Smoke and Mirrors") and he said it was the only thing he ever wrote that actually disturbed him.

2008-08-19 [My Sky's The Limit]: It didn't so much disturb me or open my eyes, but...it like...made me think what would happen in the future you know?

2008-08-19 [Deg]: Yeah...it's a weird thing to think about.

2008-08-19 [The Lost Boy]: personnaly, it made me think about all the pretty horrible things we do to animals,i mean if their was a complete role reversal (which why would there be?,, but obivously this is all hypothetical) i think we as humans would feel pretty dam shit, being in the position we put animals in.

food for thought,

2008-08-19 [Deg]: Yeh, I know what you mean and I agree. But...ya know, it's not going to turn me into a vegetarian, either.

2008-08-19 [The Lost Boy]: i was a vegetarian for 8 years, its not actually that hard, i still eat vegetarian food (my mum and sisters still being one) but this sort of thing doesnt put me off eat meat anyway. ok bad stuff happen to animals, but its not like by me not eating meat, that it'll change what other people do, (killing animals ect)

2008-08-19 [Deg]: Yeh, exactly. Some people are never going to stop, and well, what am I going to do. I don't like torturing animals, sure. But I do like eatin them. So what does that make me?

2008-08-19 [The Lost Boy]: i suppose some people could say "a hypocrite" (you know,, the old "it IS cruel to eat animals" argument) but i mean, just so long as were not supporting cruelty to animals, dosent mean we cant eat em. animals get eaten in nature all the time, its just handy were near the top of the food chain.

2008-08-19 [Deg]: Yehhhhh...exactly *nods*

2008-08-19 [Raiyr]: I have SO heard of this author/writer before. I knew the name was familiar...

2008-08-20 [Deg]: yeah, I love his writing. :D
